NH Exhaust Law?

NH has changed the laws in 2004-2005 making after market exhausts legal in this State. Motorcycles cannot exceed 106db, and for cars it is almost impossible to measure the decibals anyways, so law enforcement cannot cite you for loud exhaust because they would have no evidence...decibal readers are far to expensive for agencies to pick up. An officers word alone is not sufficent evidence, therefore it makes the court system throw out cases, therefore there is no decibal law in the state of NH for cars.

there IS a law on exhaust systems, anything louder than stock is illegal!

266:59 Muffler; Prevention of Noise. -
I. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler as defined in RSA 259:66, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a way.

II. The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes, smoke, flame, gas, oil or fuel residue.

III. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in any manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted above that emitted by the original muffler installed in the vehicle and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this section.

i included III just because, this is what john is talking about that has been repealed, so yes you can have aftermarket exhaust systems, but they can't be louder than stock is basically how it works out.

you are correct, they can't prove decibel limits very easily, that's why they have the 'excessive noise' ordinances.

Don't come to milford if you have a loud exhaust, they are cracking down on it so hard here. Bikers now go around milford so they won't get caught. The cops stand in the oval (where all the roads go to and center of town) with a decible meter and check your car even if it sounds a little loud. My jeep is really loud, like here me coming from half mile away loud (just ask the other milford guy hehe)and I've got 3 tickets so far, they ask me to fix it and I say no ill just keep paying. With the justy I just take all back roads cause it usally dosent have a licence plate on it...

mmm, turbos make good mufflers as long as they are relatively small, mine only quiets the truck slightly
