    inspection

im sure someone here knows the inspection procedures and what not..

my question is that i have a peice of my rocker panel rotted out and i was wondering what i can do to cover/fix it in a quick/cheap fix so i can get my car inspected.

heres a pic of the damage

    and then next question is..

next year after my 1.8 and turbo is on can it still pass with the gt30r?

I would just slap some fiberglass and bondo over it, just to cover it up for the inspection. If you want it fixed properly then you can do it later.

As for inspection, its a 91, so no emissions for you! Safety only for you.

Yeahyour good. Take something and whipe out the sharp edges, throw some duct take and cover the sharp edges/wholes into interior and rattlecan it. It'll pass. The turbo etc. is good as long as cats are there or at least appear to be there and technically there has to be baffles in the muffler, but most places don't look/care. Even if you had a 96+ as long as theres no CEL and the computer can connect to the ecu your good. No worries.

P.S. I am still still licensed to do state inpections so I know a little something. They only way the rust could fail is

        1. sharp edges
        2. hole into passenger compartment
        3. safety issue

so do you think i can just slap a big glob of bondo on it and paint it and i should be good?

i will get new rocker pannels eventually...just i want to get out and drive it.

if you just throw a big glob on it, it will probably fall off on the way to the station. do what chris said, cut off the nasty edges and use some fiberglass with the bondo to cover it up.

i've seen "great stuff" expanding foam stuff used. spray it on/in there, let it expand and dry, shave it down to the shape you want, and rattle can it.

I too care of a buddies car that failed by using spray foam insulation. Fill the hole, trim, sand then paint.

The big thing inspection worries about isn't the sharp or the rust... It's exhaust fumes. At least that's what I was told by that particular inspector.

While we're on the subject... Dry rotted tires: Pass / Fail ? - Not severe, just cracking around sidewall.

Tirerack sold me some junk tires, bought them 4 months ago, and they're dry rotting.. im still getting jerked around by dunlop and tirerack to get them replaced... but i need to make sure I get it done ASAP if the car is going to fail inspection this month.

That foam is wate/air tight, that's b.s. said shop was jerking your buddy around. DUCT tape oover a whole doesn't fail.

-as far as the dry rot, it's really hard to tell, it mostly depends on the person doing the inspection and whether or not they feel it's a safety issue.

What I'm saying is that they PASSED the car with the spray foam.

                              Great Stuff FTW!

About the dry rot, you can try using a good tire shine. Sometimes it'll hide small dry rot cracks. You could also get them real muddy, a lot of inspectors don't want to clean your wheels for you to find dry rot.
