    DIY MR2 Auto-up window mod

hey guys, figured id make myself another DIY thread for a cool little "mod" that i did last night. it works awesome and is pretty damn cool.

on a MK2 MR2 with power windows, the drivers side window has an auto-down feature, but no auto-up. its a great feature to have when for example your getting on the on ramp and need both hands (WOT and shifting)

this modification shouldnt take you more than 30min. and cost less than a dollar.

    Heres what you need:

    a phillips head screwdriver
    a flatblade screwdriver (or knife)
    small file
    soldering iron and solder
1 diode. (1N4003, 1N4005, or 1N5404) -radioshack carries all three kinds

once you have everything together, its time to begin.

the first thing your gonna want to do, is remove the window/locks/mirror control board from the door panel.

to do this, theres a few things you need to do.

***keep in mind, that all of the parts you will handle throughout this entire process, you will need to be careful with. you are dealing with pieces that are over 20 years old!!

    now, first things first.

start by removing the hand grab in the door panel. the may need a little prying with your flatblade. be carful with it!

next, move you attention to the door handle. you will need to remove the cup behind the handle. remove the small screw that holds it down.

-TIP: i like to use the hand grab to hold all of the screws that i remove so i dont lose track of them!

next, this is a little tricky. look where the tip of my knife in the photo is. on the top and the bottom of the cup, there is a clip section that holds the cup in place. you need to put your flatblade (or knife) and put outward pressure from the door handle/lock area. at the same time, pull outward on the cup. you will need to also pull the door handle outward at the same time.

its tricky but its not too hard. just be careful not to break or crack anything.

now that those parts are removed, move your attention to the bottom of the door panel. there are three small screws you will need to remove. get your phillips screwdriver to remove them

next, at the upper right hand side of the door panel, there is a black capped screw. remover the small cap with your flatblade (or pliers etc.) and then use your phillips screwdriver to remove the screw

once that is out, grab near the bottom of the door panel near the speaker area. with a quick tug, pull outward to unpop the the panel on the bottom/side.

next, put pressure at the top of the door panel, and pull upward. keep in mind about the tweeter cover. you dont have to remove it, but if need be, pop the cover off by gently pulling on it (may need to be coaxed with the flatblade)
the door panel should come off of the top lip of the door.

** TIP: dont pull the door card off too hard, or let it drop etc. you still have wires attached!!

unplug the the mirror control switch. then unplug the power window/lock switch. then unplug the door panel light.

*be careful with the plugs!! they are delicate!! you may need to use your flatblade to press down the small tabs to unplug them

once you have the panel off, remove the master panel from the door panel. on the front or top of the master panel, (look on the underneath inside the door panel) you will see a small metal clip. press on it top pop it out. then slide the control panel out. once its out then you should have your switch panel!

        heres mine.

**TIP: Dont have Grappone Toyota work on your cars. unles its oil changes etc. even then be cautious. heres why. (not kidding) and this is after the weeks of waiting, the hindreds of dollars of damage, and the leaving my windows open in snow storms TWICE!! (idk why they were even opened) lol

anyway, your next step is to look on the bottom of the switch panel. there are three phillips screws that you need to remove to seperate the window switches from the rest of the panel. be careful removing these screw! these parts are very brittle! especially take care during the install!

next take off the clear cover to expose the circuit board. use your flatblade, press the locking tabs and pull the clear cover off. as always, be careful not to break or crack anything!

the next step, is to get out your soldering iron, and plug it in to warm it up. in the meantime, get your diode out. i bought a pack of two, since thats all they had. cost me $1.19. clip the leads on the diode so they arent more than about .5 to .75 inches.

next, take a look at where you will be soldering. the end of my screwdriver is pointing to one part where you will solder the diode on. the other end of the diode goes to the lead that you can see in the picture directly to the right. it is a small hole on my circuit board.

once you found where you need to solder, get ready to solder the diode on. make sure it is facing the right direction. pay attention to the painted mark on the diode and make sure it faces the same way as shown in the photo.

**Tip: make sure you are carful not to burn any other components, or the circuit board when soldering!!

          solder the diode on

next, replace the clear cover. you may have to bend the diode over slightly to make it fit. make sure not to break it, or touch it to any other contacts.

the final step, is to take a look back on top and at the back of the switches themselves. if you look at the photo, you can see the two tabs that hang down on the back of both switches. the drivers side switch has slightly longer tabs. use a small file and gently file the tabs down shorter. (about 1.5mm) when you lift up on the switch, it should be normal feeling, then at the top there should be a click. just like it feels when it is pressed down and clicks for the auto-down. if it doesnt click, you may need to file a bit more.

once your done with that step, put the window switches back into the control panel and carefully install the three screws. once your done with that, install the control panel into the door panel. then plug everything back in, slade the door panel back on the door, press the pop rivets in place, install the three screws on bottom, the one on the side with the cap. put the door handle cup back on and screw it down. pop in the hand grab and test it out!!!
