What industry is that? I'm looking for part time work but I dont think I could actually do anything welding related without certifications schooling ect

Light metal fabrication in all fields at least. A friend of mine who owns his own performance shop started out tig welding for a company that makes medical equipment for hospitals all around the world. It was a very clean job.. it had to be.

Look on craigslist in your area, they are always people looking for welders. Companies that need equipment fixed and others that need stuff made everywhere.

Plus welders get paid good money.

Welding rocks. I haven't been doing it for long, but I love it. I've had to carbon arc the past two days... not as fun.

your going to fast a bead should look like a line of ( sort of like this ((((((((((((((( it's hard to explain but the lil puddle of metal that you make needs to manupulated, almost like your trying to right the letter c but veeeeerry small. also you need to watch your heat with mig too hot and you will blow through the base metal to cold and and it won't hold with a dam.

all in all man i'd say your on the right track it takes time and practice personally i think that stick welding is easier to learn with once you get the hang of that you'll pick up mig and tig fairly quickly all though tig is a whole other animal. also i totally disagree with pulsing technique that your using. when you weld a pipe you should go a quarter of the way around the switch to the exact opposite side and do a another quater, let it cool a bit then repeat the steps on the last to sections remebering to grind your starts and stops i can't stress that enough if you don't gring your starts and stops you get slag in your weld and that is something just waiting to FAIL.
all this is stuff i learned in the navy over 7 years of welding and and schools they sent me to for both basic and advanced high pressure systems.

Sound good. I will try some 1" sections. Any advice for the correct motion? I lot of the time I'm doing a zig zag arc motion like a set of exaggerated Cs to weld and I dont seem to have a preference yet for pushing or pulling.

Problem is when I am butt welding 2 peices together I blow right through the edge of the material even though if I weld with the same settin in the middle of the plate it doesnt even look like its that hot. Also if material isnt perfectly lining up how to build up material to fill in small gaps which is something I run into all the time with exhaust welding and to close an 1/8" gap requires tons of weld build up and a big huge ugly weld

Always wanted to learn how weld. Did some stick welding for the first time a few months back and have been wanting to get into it more. The style I was taught (and correct me if I'm wrong) is to make tiny "U"s (as this is a more natural and controlled motion) and work toward you thus allowing you to push your weld where you want. If that is correct and it helps to explain it, cool. If it's wrong, quote it, slap a fail on it and please explain the correct way.
