So I have been reading about the K03S and the K04 using the same housings. a few companies swap the internals. I saw some MS3 guys running these turbos and getting 320-360WHP, are these legit?

F it, I will anyway! I poked around a bit for my turbo options, the hybrid K04 has reworked internals and a polished compressor housing IIRC.... They claim to be able to put down about the WHP you mentioned, I havent seen a dyno sheet though, MZR fuel system FTMFL x92348348383
The numbers are probably legit in a normal non-direct injected engine IMO. It took a guy about $10-$15k (yes over half the value of the car) to get 400whp on a speed 3. Yet you can buy a kit off the shelf for $4k and get that on a regular 3. THAT is how complicated the MZR fuel system is. I guess the guy that owned that speed 3 basically had it living at CP-e in Maryland do they could do the R&D to hit 400whp. However, Mark at streetunit put a GT35r on his and hit 380whp on stock internals before going BOOM. I do not know what turbo is in the 400whp speed 3, Poke around on streetunitforum.com and you will find the thread.Shawn C.

Well BNR Turbos has a somewhat expensive (well i guess compared to reworked k04s) hybrid kit out, its like 1100 or 1300 bucks to take your turbo and basically mates it to a GT28? (journal bearing). Supposedly good for 330whp

i was reading about his awhile ago on golfmkv.com because someone was selling a first gen ko4 from APR which is just swapped internals. and while they got k04 power out of it it still kinda had a k03 power curve..-13 FRS

sounds like the t3/t4 hybrids for us 2.3T guys. its a t3 turbine and center with a t4 compressor bolted up. spools quick with the extra oomph of the t4. with a straight t4 you can get higher hp, but its all up high in the power band. spooling full boost at 2500 is what i like, and the hybrids allow that while raising the efficiency and max boost.
and yes, ms3's are sick rigs from the factory, but putting down more than 300 whp is a bitch with direct injection. direct injection is a huge limiting factor on anything with it. once again, something from the manufacturers that is good stock, thats it.Shelby

Much like fuel injection back in the day when carburetors ruled the streets, I think the declarations of direct injection being untunable are more from unfamiliarity and ignorance. Ignorance...such an ugly word.

well the newer cobalt ss's are direct injection I believe and they use a k04 turbo also. They are miles ahead of the speed3 in tuning. haha I have a speed3 but I hate how gti's with a k04 and a cobalt with a k04 are making more power, easier then we are.[cp-e cold air intake] [cp-e rear motor mount] [turbosmart bpv] [SU shifter bushings]Comment

I remember having my speed3 and my buddies and the power they made with just a intake, downpipe and testpipe was huge from stock. Thinking once this car get some good tuning it'll be crazy. im not saying its untunable, but that it will be the wall that you first come to. much like the displacement wall. you can put as much pressure through a straw as you want to, but in the end you will need a bigger straw to flow that extra fuel. being internally cast 'lines' is the biggest problem.Shelby
