    Alusil rebuild

Any shops experienced with working with engines with an Alusil bore? I'm weighing the options of either putting my S2 down for to build the bottom end or buying a motor off-hand and hoping that the bore is good so I will only need a hone. With 184K on the block and internals, I'm 98% sure I'm going to need more than a honing for the new rings.

Also need to know what the price difference will be between replating in Alusil or Nikasil if it comes down to it so I can order the right pistons & rings.

For the record: The average cost of a 3.0L engine is 3-4K off car. ~6K for super low mileage.

I have yet to find a 3.0L block, found plenty of the 2.7L block that I "could" use, but my RARST rods would not clear the sides (the head (with port matching the coolant paths), pistons and crank and externals will be a direct fit however).

I'll give them a call. An option to pull a 3.0L Vario-cam from a 968 has been offered from someone in the NE area who is going to be LS swapping it. Going to look into more detials about cost and feasibility since he'll be shipping it to texas for the work. Doing so would give me both a second block AND the lightweight forged 968 crank. The vario cam head uses 39mm valves vs the 37mm valves of the S2 along with a higher lift, and longer duration when not activated. Since I already have the Rebuild kit and RARST rods, all I would need is coatings, pistons, and externals.

      In theory

Precision Motorsports is a no-go. They do not have the tooling to do alusil nor the experience. Further more the owner who was on the phone with me was not aware of any shops that dealt with it personally.

I was hoping to avoid shipping a block out. I guess I'll be using lindsey racing. I've seen them do a lot of 951/952 #!#!#!#!, I just prefer to work with local shops.

Based off their website I'm looking at the total cost of this escapade for building an engine will be:

~$900 to remove the M44.43 from the 968 or about the same to pull the M44.41 from the 944S2
~$200 to ship to OK (this is a guess
                        ~$1000 for the rebuild kit
                        ~$1000 for wossner pistons
Already have Porsche RARST Connecting Rods
Will be reusing the 968 forged crankshaft
~$1220-800 for machine work on the block (This is based on wether the Cylinder will needed to be bored to next size or just honed. Includes Inspecting, Cleaning, Stud extraction, decking, installing oil squirters, balancing pistons & rod assemblies.)

4-4.5K for a 400hp track ready block. And probably going to spend >$2K to prep the head depending on whether I delete the tensioner for a twin cam gear head (I will need to cowl the hood, and have an exhaust came ground to intake cam specs) and
what my final decision is on the valve work. Either way I'll be disabling the vario-cam

So 6.5K total for the engine, which leaves me 9.5K budget to take care of drivetrain and building the turbocharger system in order to accomplish by next summer.
