need some advice with flat-blacking a hood.

So, I have this yellow Volvo, and it came to me with a black junkyard hood.
(trying to find a yellow hood is nearly impossible, and not worth the $$$)
It doesn't have any dents, but the paint is terrible; It's chipped, and keyed, and just generally crappy.

Originally, I was just going to wrap it, but either way I'm going to have to do some sanding/smoothing to get it ready. I figured I might as well just smooth it, and take a whack at just going flat-black paint.

Does anyone have any tips/recommended products for this?
normally I wouldn't put much thought into it, but the hood on the 850 comes down around the front, and takes a lot of abuse from stones. I'd hate to use a crappy paint, and have chips immediately.

I was going to just sand it smooth, and repaint, but a few people have suggested stripping it to metal with airplane remover, and then prime/paining it. This just seemed a bit extreme, but if it's the right way, I'll do it.

my .02.....if the paint is that old and #!#!#!#!ty it should come off with the stripper rather easily. unless your looking for a show car job going to metal isn't necessary. if it gets bombarded with chips the paint won't matter too much. after your paint it get a clear protection film for it or have that 3m clear bra paint put on it. i think you have to have it done though a 3m certified dealer though i don't think they sell that in stores.
Now they will know why they are afraid of the dark. Now they will learn why they fear the night.

You can get the hood wrapped in flat or matte vinyl- which would not chip whatsoever.

+ you would not have to go through the hassle of painting it.

                  It's not THAT old =0[

I'm looking forward to driving hoodless for a day.. should be fun.
I suppose I'll just have to see how deep these scratches really are.
Hopefully, some filler primer does the jorb

^just prime is and wet sand it a few times until you get it as smooth as you like it. you shouldnt have a problem. most keys aren't down to metal, although some are.

I've used VHT Epoxy paint with great results- we painted my friends entire Maxima satin black with it. Also used it on my wheels.

Its made for suspension parts, so its very hard and has a bit of flex in it-
It resists chipping very well, he does not have one chip on his hood.

Not to dig up an old thread but I have heard that John Deere tractor paint (believe its available at Tractor Supply) is very high quality and relatively durable for a flat paint.

What are you going to use it on ? Some flat colors can be mixed by the autobody supplier. I once painted two subarus for this guy in army drab chrome and all including the bumpers. He loved it. Scott.
