    FNG here!

Hey, the forum owner Shawn introduced me.

He showed me a photo of a friend's 70's Nova with a Volvo motor in it and I immediately knew I had to join up.

I'm currently running a couple of ~25 year old Volvos (partly because I love those old un-loved cars, and partly because it irritates my co-workers at the Toyota dealership) and a 20 year old GMC K1500.

I have a near-pathological need to keep machines in service far beyond their expected lifespan, especially those that were designed (mostly) right to begin with.

I'm not so much interested in tuning as in increasing fuel economy and driving cheap. Lately though I've been getting more and more interested in engine/trans swaps, possible electric conversions, running cars off woodgas, and other related mad backwood-scientist subjects.

Here's the member with the Nova with a Volvo motor http://nemotorsport.com/boards/member.php?u=423 I have to meet that guy!

          Hey guys!

          Thanks for the warm welcome.

Don't have a V8 Volvo (yet). A full size V8 will fit though, those that have done it seem mighty happy with it. Someone had one for sale on Craigslist, 347hp 368ft/lbs, if I recall. Had a limited slip rear that went with it (not installed). Wagon was mint, he was asking $12k, IMO well worth that.

Another builder who did it claimed that not only was he able to monkey-hammer all sorts of unsuspecting cars on the street, that his brick got 32MPG @ 75MPH with the A/C blasting. Car supposedly only turned 1200 RPM at that speed. I have read that if it's done right, it weighs 50lbs less than the stock motor(!).

Have a lot of things to do before I get there though, e.g. part out the old '91 Volvo wagon (garage needs sorted out to make space first), pretty up the existing units ('90 740 wagon, '89 740 sedan & a '95 GMC K1500), spray the undersides w/oil, some maintenance, etc. etc.

I'll post some pics soon. Nothing too pretty, but at least the bodies are solid, and I have some decent aluminum wheels for the bricks now.

My only complaint about 740's is the transmissions aren't that robust. I've been digging around in my spare time to try and find a solution to it. The redblocks go forever, the AW70L transmissions..? Not so much. I figure there must be a lighter, stronger gearbox out there that will play nice with my bricks...

Dave, just a FYI if you want to tag someone so they get a notification that you mentioned them , you want to put an @ in front of their user name . No space between them.

I'm going to replace my sealed glass halogen headlights to my '89 740 with something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-X-6-CLEAR-...d14a73&vxp=mtr

...Not necessarily those, but they're a good example of plastic 4x6 enclosures for more modern lamps like this http://assets.sylvania.com/assets/im...f8befdcbbd.jpg

This way I can have two high beam lamps, and two low beam lamps, which will more than double the light output from stock. No moose will go unnoticed by my brick!

...Yes, I will make sure they are focused so I don't blind oncoming drivers, and I just picked up a big bag of switches, so I may even wire them up so I can run one or two sets as desired.

Now to figure out how to get more light in front of my '90 wagon (has the two big plastic enclosure headlights). Thinking of cutting some slots next to the headlamps and fitting in some LED fog lamps.
